The Ladies Study Group Charitable Trust hosted its Annual Award Ceremony 2023 at ITC Royal Bengal on January 25th. Smt Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development and Minority Affairs, the Chief Guest at this event, presented the Award. NGO Ek Tara's students presented a dance performance, highlighting the crucial role of girls' education in societal transformation.
Rupantaran Foundation received the prestigious award for outstanding contribution to supporting the education of girls from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Established in 2009, this non-profit organization envisions a society built on equity, dignity, and peace. Ms Smita Sen and Mr. Abhishek, Founders of Rupantaran Foundation, received the Award on behalf of the organisation.
The LSG Charitable Trust will disburse around 20 lakh towards various initiatives, at Disha Foundation, MCKS Food for the Hungry Foundation, Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre & Research Institute, South Kolkata Hamari Muskaan and some other NGOs before the end of this financial year. The LSG Shanti Devi Khaitan Award will continue to support a girl student's training at the Woodlands College of Nursing.
During an engaging conversation with Shweta Punj, Policy Lead, Money Control, the Hon’ble Minister, Smt Smriti Zubin Irani, shared her life journey candidly through anecdotes. The youngest minister in the current regime’s cabinet emphasised, "Success is just success; it doesn’t encompass life" and highlighted the lessons of frugality and street smartness learned from poverty. According to her perspective, "Nothing is negative in life; it is your lens or prism." She vehemently stated that there is no direct relationship between happiness and success.
Addressing questions about her recent Davos trip, the minister rhetorically replied, “I wore my belief and culture. It was evident that India has undergone a tectonic shift as a country, positioned to be a bridge between the global North and South.”
The event was a resounding success, leaving attendees yearning for more.
LSG President Sucheta Merh welcomed, Chief Guest Mr Sanjiv Mehta, CEO and MD of Hindustan Unilever, inaugurating the Annual Awards 2022 ceremony at the ITC Royal.
Recognizing outstanding commitment towards providing low cost health care for economically challenged, chronic renal failure patients, LSG’s Charitable Trust Award was presented to Kolkata Swasthya Sankalp. They achieved the remarkable feat of providing dialysis at only fifty rupees per session as well as pro bono sessions commencing March 2023.
The Ladies Study Group Charitable Trust Annual Award Scheme was initiated in 1975, commemorating the International Women's Year to give recognition to initiative and merit in field of social work. The Award is presented in recognition of an institution or individual's outstanding contribution and commitment to helping the underprivileged. The Award not only provides financial help but also recognizes their selfless dedication towards bringing change by overcoming debilitating circumstances or physical challenges.
The LSG 2020 award honoured and supported the outstanding initiative, and the selfless dedication of charitable institutions and non-government organizations, working towards uplifting the underprivileged sections of society. This year's theme was recognition of exemplary work done towards the welfare of women and children in exceptionally challenging times.
The prestigious LSG Charitable Trust Award for the year was given to 'Calcutta Rescue', spearheaded by Mr Jaideep Chakravarti. He shared that their organization served the poorest communities in Kolkata and its surrounding districts. Their beneficiaries including pregnant and children needing medical aid, were acutely distressed due to the pandemic. They reached out to them through novel initiatives, including mobile school vans for young children who lacked the resources to go online.

Award ceremony began with a melodious opening performance – a soulful rendition of 'Mile Sur Mera Tumhara' by musician duo Sourendro and Soumyojit, saluting the differently-abled students of the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy, The Calcutta Deaf and Dumb School and girls from the NGO 'Ektara', for their courage and determination against all adversities.

Ms Mallika Dey, recipient of the LSG Charitable Trust Award, began her journey selling batashas and by dint of effort and perseverance improved her financial condition. Now she is the probably the only in West Bengal woman who drives her own minivan to deliver gas cylinders door to door in Kharagpur, West Bengal..
Abhilasha Sethia, the President of LSG began the event by felicitating the Ramkrishna Mission with the Shanti Devi Khaitan Award, a Rs. 50,000 prize dedicated to supporting the nursing diploma of a woman. The LSG Charitable Trust Annual Award was awarded to S.A.F.E., an organization that provides clean drinking water to underprivileged communities in Kolkata. The award included a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakhs and a citation, which was read by Diya Jaiswal.
For its 2015 Annual Awards Ceremony, Ladies Study Group Charitable Trust invited nominations from non-government organisations or institutions dedicated to working towards prevention and abolition of trafficking of women and children. The Award was given to Hamari Muskan and was presented by Praful Patel.
For this year’s Award, Ladies Study Group tried to identify an organisation for outstanding dedication in working towards Tribal Welfare. Our eminent panel of Jurists unanimously chose Sundarban Rural Development and Training Centre or SRDTC, Amtola, South 24 Paraganas, for this year’s recognition because of their exceptional work and contribution towards rebuilding a sustainable and self reliant society in the tribal areas of the Sundarbans.
The Award was presented by table maestro Bickram Ghosh and received by Shri Himadri Baruah, President, SRDTC.
